Blog Designs

A blog ("web log") is a Web-based journal. If you want to be a blogger (create your own blog), you don't need a technical background, and you don't need to be able to program. Here are some design tools to ensure you earn the place in posterity that you deserve, by helping you create a successful, attractive blog of your own.

Blog Directories

Blogging can be a lot of fun, but -- like reading someone else's diary -- it can also get boring more quickly than a leftover flapjack. So when the time comes that you simply must have something new and interesting, try these directories. As you explore, you'll discover that the line between blogs and other types of Web-based communication is often a blurry one. For example, you'll find lots of blogs that turn into discussion forums or online chats, leading you into thoughts and ideas you would otherwise never contemplate, all the while affording you an efficient way to use up whatever remains of your spare time.

Blog Hosting

Want your own blog? Of course you do. Here are some sites that will host your thoughts for free or -- if you want some extras -- for a reasonable price.

Blog Tools

If you want to get your blog up and running today, here are the tools and advice you'll need. Some of these tools are simple; others are highly technical. In general, you don't need to be a programmer to run a blog but, as with anything that involves computers, the more knowledgeable you are, the easier it will be.

Blogs

A weblog, or blog, is a site, maintained by one person, that documents his or her explorations around the Web. A typical blog offers many links along with annotations and personal comments. If you are bored and looking for something new under the Internet sun, take a look at a few blogs. I guarantee you'll find something interesting. (Simply think of all the blog creators as being your own personal Internet researchers.) If you are the type of person who likes to explore and share, why not create a blog of your own? You will be surprised at how attractive you will suddenly become to the opposite sex.

Celebrity Blogs

Here and there, scattered around the Net, are a great many "official" Web sites of famous people. However, how many of those people actually create their own sites? Very few, actually. And authentic blogs written by famous people are even rarer. However, there are some: here are blogs that (as far as I can tell) are really written by the celebrities themselves. True, we are talking minor celebs here, but, that only makes sense. After all, the only thing that Britney Spears and Hillary Clinton have in common is that they are both too busy to write their own blogs. The blogs in this list belong to Al Roker (American TV weatherman), Anna Kournikova (tennis player), Margaret Cho (comedian), Michael Moore (filmmaker and political activist), Moby (musician), and Wil Wheaton (Star Trek actor).

Communities: General

A blog community is a group of blogs that share a common host. Blog communities are characterized by having a great deal of participation, regular updates, and a collection of regular readers and contributors. As a result, you'll find a definite community feeling whenever you visit.

Communities: Specific Topics

There are many blogs that support groups of people who are interested in a specific topic. Here is a collection of such blogs that I feel are interesting and well-run. The topics discussed in these particular communities are: Google (the search engine), politics, sex, technology, and sports.

Interesting Blogs

If you have ever gone on a first date, you know that most people feel that their personal life is particularly fascinating, and that we should all be interested in what they are thinking. (Of course, most people are also convinced that they can open the pickle jar when everyone else has failed.) As you would imagine, this attitude extends to the world of blogs and, truthfully, most personal blogs are incredibly boring, not even worth the electrons on which they are printed. But where does that leave us when we are searching for the very best? Is there anyone with the intellectual and moral authority -- not to mention good taste -- to decide which blogs are interesting and worth reading? Of course there is: me. So here is my personal selection of blogs-that-are-good-enough-for-you-to-waste-your-time-on.
