Laptops

A laptop computer works, more or less, like a regular desktop PC. However, a laptop is small and lightweight enough to be portable and sit on your lap comfortably. How small can laptops get and still be laptops? Well, people like a full-sized keyboard and a screen large enough to read without squinting, which puts a minimum size on how small a computer can be and still be usable as a full-fledged PC. However, within these limitations, there are a lot of choices. Before you buy a laptop, check with the Net. You need to know more than when you buy a regular PC, so you should definitely do your homework before leaving home to buy your new electronic home away from home.

Newton

You are in a nerd bar in Silicon Valley, when a friend comes up to you and says, "Would you like me to beam you some cool soup?" If you are a Newton owner, you know exactly what he means: "Would you like me to transfer some cool files from my Newton to your Newton?" A Newton, or more formally, the Newton Message Pad, is a portable personal organizer produced by Apple. A Newton can understand handwritten notes, keep track of appointments, and make your life easier in so many ways. The only problems are (1) it doesn't work well, (2) it's obsolete, and (3) it's discontinued. Still, there are many Newton fanatics in the world, and if you are a Newtonphile yourself, you might as well join the party. ("I'm ready, Man. Beam me some soup.")

Palmtop Resources

A palmtop is a small, hand-held computer. Palmtops evolved from PDAs (personal digital assistants) to become today's full-fledged tiny computers running today's full-fledged operating systems (such as Palm OS and Windows CE). Palmtop hardware and software is evolving all the time, and there are lots of things you need to know to use your palmtop well. These resources will allow you to explore the brave new world of brave new hand-held computers. Soon you will achieve total serenity and complete knowledge. Then you will become one with the palmtop universe, and people will travel enormous distances just to touch the hem of your garment. (Not bad for a nerd.)

WAP-Enabled Devices

WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol, a system which allows mobile devices to access Web pages. Most WAP-enabled devices are sophisticated cellular phones that also act as simple Web browsers. The WAP system requires that Web pages use only text and simple monochrome (one color) pictures. For this reason, Web pages must be specially designed if they are to be viewed with a WAP-enabled device. In addition, the pages must be small because the screen size is limited and the data connection speed is relatively slow. WAP pages are created using WML (Wireless Markup Language), which is similar to HTML (the regular Web language). Do you really want WAP? If you are not sure, you can try a simulator on the Net and see what it looks like when you WAP.

Wearable Computers

As computers become smaller and more powerful, it is only natural to imagine them being ubiquitous to the point where, one day, no matter where you go and no matter what you do, you will have access to a computer and to the Internet. One way to achieve this is to design computers that can be worn within your clothes or on your body. Such wearable computers are being developed around the world, and you don't have to wait for them to arrive in your local mall: the details are on the Net now. I predict that, within our lifetime, not only will we always be near a computer and connected to the Net, but we will also be able to control the devices by thinking and touching. Life is going to change radically, so enjoy the peace and privacy while you can.
