Bodybuilding and Weightlifting Magazines

In the movie "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", Dr. Frank N. Furter introduces Brad and Janet to Rocky, a well-developed muscle man that Dr. Furter has created for his own evil pleasure. "Brad and Janet," he asks, "what do you think of him?" Janet looks at Rocky and then at her boyfriend Brad. "Well," she replies, "I don't like a man with too many muscles." But, as we learn later, she really does. What's more, whenever Janet has a chance, she looks at the online editions of her favorite bodybuilding magazines: Hardgainer, Ironman, Muscle & Fitness, Muscle & Fitness: Hers, and Muscle Media.

National Lampoon Nostalgia

The American humor magazine National Lampoon was published from 1970 to 1998. However, its most creative and funniest issues were produced between 1970 and 1975, the Golden Age of National Lampoon. During this time, a large cadre of talented writers and artists formed the nexus of an extremely original burst of creativity that changed popular culture permanently. The National Lampoon magazine of the 70s directly inspired other well-known humor productions such as movies ("Animal House"...), TV shows ("Saturday Night Live"...), Radio shows ("The National Lampoon Radio Hour"...), Records ("Radio Dinner"...), a stage show (Lemmings), and a variety of books and anthologies. To say that National Lampoon was irreverent would be a massive understatement, sort of like saying that Richard Nixon's biggest mistake was not destroying the tapes.

News and Politics Magazines

There are two ways to keep up on the news and on what is happening in the political world. First, you can get your news from radio or television. However, you will only hear snippets of information. An alternative is to read a news magazine that takes a more long-term view and has more analyses. When you get a chance, here are some magazines to explore. Some are news, some are politics, some are politics masquerading as news: Christian Science Monitor, Mother Jones, Newsweek, The Nation, The Washington Monthly, Time, and U.S. News & World Report.

Outdoors Magazines

I have to confess, I'm a typical masculine outdoorsy kind of guy. Why, I think nothing of waking before sunrise, going for a five-mile tramp across freshly plowed country fields, coming back to chop a cord or two of wood, and then sitting down to a good old-fashioned breakfast: stacks and stacks of homemade hotcakes and real maple syrup. Yup, I sure do love all that stuff. But you know what I like even more? Sitting inside a nice cozy house, with my cat in my lap and a cup of hot chocolate in my hand, using my computer to browse outdoor magazines on the Net. Want to join me? Here they are: Field and Stream, National Geographic, Outside, Scuba Diving, Skin Diver, Sport Diver, Sports Afield and Sunset Magazine

Photography Magazines

If you have ever taken a college-level photography course, I bet you have mixed feelings. On the one hand, you love photography. On the other hand, there is a good chance that any native love you have for the art was beaten out of you by a cynical, academic loudmouth teacher. You know the type I mean. A fellow who teaches because he couldn't make it as a real photographer, and who constantly criticizes his students' work to alleviate his unconscious feelings of inadequacy. Well, photography is a great art, and the Net wants you to get back into it. Here are some good places to start: Outdoor Photographer, PC Photo, Photo District News and Shutterbug.

We all need some good fun once in awhile, and what could be more enjoyable than popular culture? You know, all the things that people do, watch and talk about when they are not working. Science Magazines

More than anything, science is a way of thinking about life and exploring the nature of our universe. I believe that people gain so much in their lives when they train their minds to be rational, knowledgeable and informed. If you enjoy reading about science and new discoveries, I think you'll like these magazines: Discover, New Scientist, Popular Science, Science & Technology Review, and Science News.

No matter what sports are your favorites, there is something for you on the Net. So when your significant other tells you to get away from that television and do something else for a change, tell her (or him) that you are going to turn off the TV and spend some time using the computer. Then connect to the Net where you can read sports magazines all day long: ESPN, Golf Digest, Ski, Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Surfer, Tennis, WaterSki and Yachting.

Travel Magazines

Sometimes, when I have been working hard for days on end, I like to just browse a travel magazine and read about exotic places. If you need ideas for your next trip or if you love to read about traveling, here are some magazines I know you will enjoy. Get ideas about places to visit, things to do, planning a trip, and much more by reading these magazines: Carribean Travel & Life, Islands, and Travel + Leisure.

Women's Magazines

Let me tell you something. Even men can enjoy women's magazines. My chief researcher brings in a women's magazine from time to time and leaves it in the bathroom. At first, I used to ignore the magazine, but, well... I love to read and when I'm sitting around bored I'll read just about anything. So I started reading about fashion, celebrities and relationships. And then one day I found myself taking one of those tests ("What type of person is your ideal mate?") and I knew I was hooked. If you are a woman, here are some magazines to enjoy. If you are a man, my advice is, don't get started: Bust, Cosmopolitan, Essence, Ladies Home Journal, Redbook and Victoria.
