Arabic News

Read news from prominent newspapers of the Arab world and keep up on what is happening in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Lebanon, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Palestine and Qatar. There are also Arab papers from countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. I have also included a Web site that carries news pertaining to Islam, as well as a Usenet group for discussion.

Australian News

Whenever I am itching for some news about Australia, I always go to these Web sites, because they have links to lots and lots of Australian news sources, including notices on the latest natural disasters. Just the thing if you are planning a little jaunt down under.

BBC News

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) started daily radio transmissions on November 14, 1922. Since then, the BBC has served as the primary broadcasting voice of Great Britain, both at home and abroad. The BBC Web site is your entrée to the U.K. news, with articles, audio and video clips. The BBC also maintains a large program of international broadcasting called BBC Worldwide (I have included its Web site as well). One thing I like about the BBC is its excellent, comprehensive news coverage. For example, the last time I visited I found out that "Textbooks used for sex education in secondary schools in England and Wales tend to be sexist and even make sex sound dull, according to research..." (No doubt they were written by the same people who write English cookbooks.)

Chinese News

In spite of the fact that about one quarter of the people in the world live in China, we understand very little about what happens within the country. One reason is that their system of government is difficult for us to understand. Here is something I'd like you to do. I am going to show you the very beginning of the Chinese Constitution (not counting the preamble). Take a look at the following quotation, and then go to a Chinese news site and read any article about politics. Notice that your interpretation of the article has been changed by knowing just a bit about the Chinese political system. Okay here it goes: "The People's Republic of China is a socialist state under the people's democratic dictatorship led by the working class and based on the alliance of workers and peasants. The socialist system is the basic system of the People's Republic of China. Disruption of the socialist system by any organization or individual is prohibited."

German News

Here's the German news, the whole German news, and nothing but the German news (in German). But how important is this to the world at large? Can we learn anything about the Germans by studying their news? There is an old German proverb that says, "A country can be judged by the quality of its proverbs." Right. I couldn't have put it better myself.

Indian News

India is a country defined by contradictions: a modern society clashing with long-standing, indelible pre-scientific traditions; a prosperous upper- and middle-class living in juxtaposition with an enormous underclass living in unimaginable poverty; large, educated urban enclaves scattered throughout a country which is largely rural and uneducated. India is also the largest and most powerful country in South Asia, and the largest democracy in the world. As such, much of what happens in India affects all of Asia and, indirectly, the rest of the world.

If you are Irish, or you used to live in Ireland, you'll enjoy keeping up on news from the Emerald Isle. These Web sites have all the daily news, sports and opinion you need. (You, however, will have to provide your favorite pub brew.)

Israeli News

One thing you can say about Israel, their news is always interesting. Somehow, this tiny country -- smaller than New Jersey -- manages to generate more news per square kilometer than any other country in the world. The best thing about Israeli news is there is always so much of it, you never have to worry about running out. The Israelis are making news so fast, there's always something new and exciting to enjoy. (I'll tell you something, though. Whoever said, "May you live in exciting times," never lived in Israel.)

Japanese News

Publishing news is an old tradition in Japan. For example, the Nikkei news service was founded in 1876. Today, we use the Internet, and there is no better way to keep up on everything that is happening in Japan. You'll especially appreciate these resources if you do business with Japanese companies, or if you are a Japanese living in a foreign country.

Mexican News

The Mexican economy is inextricably connected to that of the United States, not only as a trading partner and a member of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement), but as the source for much of the unskilled labor in the southern and western states. In addition, many residents of the U.S. are of Mexican descent, and have a strong interest in the happenings of their home country. In spite of the fact that Mexico is so important to the U.S., it is impossible to keep abreast of what is happening in Mexico if you depend on American news sources.

Pakistani News

Pakistan is a country burdened by a history of unstable governments, caught between Islamic militants and the outside world, and coexisting next to a neighbor, India, with whom it has serious longstanding political and cultural differences. Moreover, like India, Pakistan has the capability of launching nuclear weapons. Both geographically and politically, Pakistan is in a crucial position with respect to world affairs, and the real news about what goes on in the country is important to us all.

Reuters News

Reuters is a news agency founded by the German entrepreneur Paul Julius Reuter in 1851. The agency was based on Reuter's determination to "come up with solutions for his clients". For example, in 1850, Reuter used carrier pigeons to deliver closing stock prices, closing the only gap in the telegraph system connecting Berlin and Paris. The Reuters news agency prides itself on offering objective news services and, toward that end, they established the Reuters Trust to make sure Reuters is never owned by a particular interest group or faction. At the online Reuters site, you can read lots of basic news: international, U.S., politics, business and sports.

South African News

South Africa is a fascinating country, with many different cultures (they have 11 official languages). If you're interested in finding out what's happening in South Africa, the Net is the place to do it. One of these Web sites has daily updates compiled from South African press agencies. You can find out a lot more by reading these summaries than you can from any regular newspaper.

U.K. News

For some reason, I find English news fascinating, especially the comings and goings of the royal family. If you share my interests, you can use the Net to keep up on what's happening day by day in the U.K. (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Regardless, reading the news from a U.K. viewpoint is interesting, especially if you are an American who gets most of his or her news from TV.
