Cayce, Edgar

Edgar Cayce (1877-1945) was an American "psychic" who founded the Edgar Cayce Institute for Intuitive Studies and Atlantic University. Cayce is best known for his psychic work as a medical diagnostician and a reader of past lives. However, he is also celebrated for his many interesting predictions. For example, he predicted that, in 1958, the United States would discover a death ray that had originally been used on Atlantis. (In fact, Cayce is responsible for a lot of the more fantastic things people believe about Atlantis.) He also predicted that China would be converted to Christianity by 1968. Oh well, Babe Ruth used to strike out a lot too.

Chaos Magick

Chaos magick is a system of magick that is personal (as opposed to group-oriented) and non-traditional (as opposed to the "old ways" of traditional ritual). It does not have a particular belief system. Each "Chaote" (person who practices chaos magick) believes whatever suits him or her. Chaos magick recognizes no particular deity, theology or morality. "Nothing is True, and Everything is Permitted." This is a world view in which life is chance, random, accidental, chaotic and discordant. (If you can make any sense of this information, you probably have the right chemistry to practice chaos magick.)

Hermeticism

Hermeticism is not easy to define. It is an esoteric tradition, related to alchemy and magick, and connected to specific works of Hermes Trismegistus (the Egyptian god Thoth), the legendary author of various writings on astrology and magic. Hermeticism is not easy to understand, so be forewarned: you can't be in a hurry.

Lightful Images

If seeing is believing, then this will put you one step closer to believing that some really strange stuff is going on in the universe, things you would rather not know. So maybe it's best if you didn't look at these pictures of aliens and other paranormal occurrences.

Magick

The term "magick" was coined by Aleister Crowley (1875-1947), the author of the book "Magick in Theory and Practice". (You should know, however, that a lot of people, even practitioners of magick, consider Crowley to be a nut.) Magick is the art of using charms, spells and rituals to create supernatural effects and to control natural events. The study of magick will take you on a long journey to a lot of mystical, mysterious places, so be sure to take along a extra snack just in case.

Necronomicon

The original title of the Necronomicon was "Al-Azif". (Azif is an Arab word signifying a nocturnal sound made by insects, which was thought to be the howling of demons.) "Al-Azif" was written around the year 730 by Abdul Al-Hazred, a crazed and wandering poet from Yemen. In 950, the work was translated into what we now know as the Necronomicon by a Greek philosopher named Theodorus Philetus. Some people say the book is full of powerful spells by which you can raise the dead (in case your servants call in sick the night of a big dinner party); other people have their doubts. The document has a long history of suppression and destruction, and has been banned repeatedly. It is said that Abdul Al-Hazred met his death by being devoured by a monster in broad daylight. Even now, people say just looking at the Necronomicon will bring you bad luck. Still wanna read it?

Nostradamus

Nostradamus (1503-1566), actually Michel de Nostredame, was a French physician, mathematician and astrologer. He is remembered as the author of a book called "Centuries", consisting of 946 four-line verses or quatrains. The quatrains are mired in obscure, misleading, vague symbolisms and encryptions. Notwithstanding, many people believe that Nostradamus was a prophet who was able to predict specific future events. For example, the following quatrain is cited as proof that Nostradamus predicted the 1963 assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy: "The ancient work will be accomplished, / And from the roof evil ruin will fall on the great man: / They will accuse an innocent, being dead, of the deed: /The guilty one is hidden in the misty copse." Hmmm…

Ouija

A Ouija board is a device used to help receive spiritual and telepathic messages. It is thought that the name comes from the French and German words for yes: "oui" and "ja" (but there are other stories). The Ouija apparatus consists of a board and a movable pointer. The board is marked with the letters of the alphabet as well as various other symbols. One or more people touch the pointer while concentrating on spiritual thoughts. As if by magic, the pointer will move from one letter to another, spelling out a message. The spirit of the Ouija may not solve all your problems, but it's certainly cheaper than psychotherapy.

Paranormal News

Just in case you don't have paranormal abilities, here's a more pedestrian way to find out what's new in the world of sightings, aliens, ghosts, bigfoot, strange occurrences, psychic phenomena, crop circles, and other paranormal topics. The other day, I read a paranormal news article that said, "Harley, a psychic will be calling you soon." Just then the phone rang. When I picked it up, a voice at the other end said, "See?" and hung up.

Parapsychology

Remember all those nights you'd stay up late with friends, turn out the lights, and by the eerie glow of a flashlight you would tell ghost stories and creepy folk legends? None of that has changed; it's just that the scary stories get more complicated and sophisticated. Believers of the weird get together to talk about ESP, out-of-body experiences, dreams and altered states of consciousness.

Psychokinesis and Telekinesis

Psychokinesis (PK) is mind over matter. More precisely, it is the ability to manipulate material objects using the power of the mind. For example, if you could bend a spoon without touching it or using an understandable external force, that would be PK. Some people consider remote viewing or healing to be PK. Telekinesis, the ability to move a material object, is a particular type of PK. Do PK and telekinesis really exist? Does the Pope live in the woods? Are bears Catholic?

Skepticism

A great many people in the world have superstitious and pseudo-scientific beliefs. In my experience, the people with the most incredible beliefs are the people who suffer from a lack of critical thinking and too little background in the hard sciences. Some people think it doesn't matter-what's the difference if some people want to believe in such things? I believe that it does make a difference, that in a small but significant way, we all lose when individuals base their lives on superstition and pseudo-scientific beliefs. It's not always easy being the bad guy, but someone has to do it.

Temple of Set

The Temple of Set (ToS) is an "initiatory magical order of the Left Hand Path." Let's break that down: "initiatory" refers to self-advancement through levels of self-knowledge; "magical" refers to real magic (magick); the "Left Hand Path" refers to inner work that leads to individualism (the "Right Hand Path" would be growing outwardly). Legally, ToS is a religion, but probably, it is best thought of as a philosophical movement and initiatory school of magick with a heavy Egyptian influence. In 1975, ToS broke off from the Church of Satan, but don't get the wrong idea; they are not Satan worshipers.
