Animal Sounds

These sounds are a lot of fun, especially if you have children. Listen to birds, whales, dolphins, seals, ducks, cows, zebras, polar bears, tigers, turkeys, pigs, dogs, donkeys, elephants, frogs, goats, cats, and more. I have also included a site that has a list of animal noises as they are pronounced in other languages. For example, a cat noise in English is "meow", but in other languages it is "miao" (Chinese), "meu" (Catalan), "myau" (Ukrainian) and "niaou" (Greek). (I wonder what cats say in Klingon?)

Bird Sounds

Here are some cool collections of bird sounds that are pleasant and engaging. One of my favorites is the kookaburra (a large Australian kingfisher bird that sounds like a fat lady laughing at a Marx Brothers movie). You can also listen to bluejays, chickadees, crows, cockatoos, magpies, peewees, ravens, and more. (Quick bird-sound story: When I was in medical school, I once had a couple of friends over to my apartment. As a trick, one of the friends [Paul Walton] and I put on an album of tropical bird sounds and turned the volume down very low. The other friend, whose name I won't mention [Tim Rutledge], had no idea what we had done. Now this was in a small apartment in downtown Toronto, and every few minutes Tim would sit up and say, "Do you guys hear anything?" "No, Tim," we would reply, "you must be hearing things." He never figured it out. (Today, Tim is a respected emergency room physician, a wonderful husband and the father of three sons. So, if you ever meet him, don't mention anything.)

Christmas Sounds

On the Net, Christmas lasts all year. Not only is the entire Internet suffused with the spirit of charity, love, forgiveness and sanctity, but you can listen to Christmas sounds whenever you want: enjoy dogs barking the tune "Jingle Bells", listen to sound clips from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", laugh at parodies of traditional Christmas songs. Truly, the spirit of holiness and reverence is never out of season.

Goldwave

Goldwave is a digital audio editor that can open, play, modify and convert just about any sound format you have heard of. You can make use of special effects such as Doppler, distortion, echo, flange and transposition. Goldwave is especially useful if you do audio work with Java applications. This is great software. Once you try it, I know you will like it (and I bet you will want to pay the registration fee). There are enough auditory bells and whistles here to equip the entire Peruvian army.

Sound Archives

Are you bored with the sounds of silence? Well, special occasions call for special sounds. Some days you may need a little Seinfeld. Other days you may need some classic Monty Python, a friendly cartoon sound file or, perhaps, something so strange that no one will even know what it is.

Television and Movie Sounds

Never again will you have to be nervous about being charming and witty the next time you go to a party. Just memorize some of these television and movie sounds. When people come up to talk to you, do your best to imitate what you've heard on the Net, and it won't be long before everyone will want to be your friend.
