THE ISLAND SYNDROME

Part 1: Understanding the Island Syndrome

(August 12, 2010)

The Lady and the Psychiatrist

A woman walks into a psychiatrist's office.

"Doc," she says, "you've got to help me. "

"What's the problem?" says the psychiatrist.

"It's my husband. He thinks he's a refrigerator."

The psychiatrist thinks for a moment. "Well, that seems like a harmless delusion. Why don't you just let him think he's a refrigerator?"

"But Doc," says the woman, "at night, he sleeps with his mouth open, and the little light keeps me awake."

"Just as a planet revolves around a central body as well as rotating on its own axis, so the human individual takes part in the course of development of mankind at the same time as he pursues his own path in life."

— Sigmund Freud, Civilization and Its Discontents
